Uber Accident Insurance
How Uber Accident Insurance Works
If you’re deciding to become a driver for Uber, there are a few things you’ll have to consider. One of the biggest considerations you’ll have to make, is what to do in an accident and how to protect yourself from liability and damage (once you’ve ensured that everyone is safe).
Before we get into Uber’s insurance policy, there are a few accident safety facts that are important to cover first.
There are three general rules of thumb that everyone should follow immediately after getting into an accident. The first two steps are general, but the third step is specifically for when you are working for Uber at the time of an accident, in which you are driving customers.
- Step one: check that all parties involved in the accident are safe.
- Step two: if necessary, immediately call the police and paramedics.
- And finally, step three: once everything has calmed down and the first two steps are taken care of, call Uber to report what has happened.
Reporting an Accident to Uber
In order to report an accident with Uber, on the Uber website direct yourself to Trip Issues and Fare Adjustments and then click on ‘I was just in an accident’.
After going to that screen, you then report exactly what happened in the accident (and you’ll see an option to select which trip the accident occurred in, which you will be prompted to click).
Following the report, an Uber employee will contact you to confirm that all parties involved are safe (and to collect any additional required information).
Uber Accident Insurance
For Uber drivers, insurance can initially seem like a confusing thing – but it doesn’t have to be.
Following an initial accident report on Uber’s website, Uber will then email an Incident Report Form to you. This form must be filled out in order to submit a coverage claim with insurance. When Uber receives the filled-out Insurance form, they will send it to the relevant insurance carriers. Following this, the associated insurance company will investigate the situation – and then ultimately determine if their insurance coverage can be applied. They will notify you of their determination within 2-3 business days.
Personal Insurance Declarations Page
Before an insurance company contacts you in 2-3 business days, Uber tells you that you will need to find your personal insurance declarations page. The page will list the coverages for your vehicle.
Examples of this may include collision or comprehensive coverage. While there will be physical damage coverage available to you, as the driver, it’s important to remember: you will still be responsible for a deductible of $1000. It is important to note that if you are driving your vehicle for personal use and not actively completing a job for Uber, you will not be covered under Uber’s accident insurance. Because of this, drivers should make sure they have their own insurance provider (in accordance to state laws) to protect them when they’re ‘off the clock’.
Uber does not specifically detail the insurance partners that they work with, so it is helpful for you to look into your own personal insurance provider. For instance, insurance companies such as GEICO have rideshare insurance specifically for people employed by companies like Uber.
So, when you’re trying to make some extra money on the road working for Uber, you can rest easy with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you’re covered by an adequate ridesharing insurance policy.
