What is UberSELECT?
UberSELECT is one of Uber’s premium car options. It is advertised as a mid-range service, somewhere between UberX and Uber BLACK in terms of overall quality.
The main difference between Uber SELECT cars and Uber BLACK is threefold:
- SELECT vehicles do not have to be black
- the price-point of SELECT is lower than Uber Black rates
- SELECT vehicles are sometimes slightly less high-end than Uber BLACK vehicles (think BMW 3-Series over a Mercedes S-Class, etc).
UberSELECT cars are typically premium sedans — a clear improvement upon Uber X (which is a much cheaper option than UberSELECT). Click here to compare SELECT to Uber XL.
Essentially, UberSELECT represents a ‘third tier’ in the Catalogue. It’s a semi-luxury offering — a more affordable Uber car service for passengers who want a little luxury during their ride.
Note: This service used to be called Uber PLUS, but is now referred to as UberSELECT across most markets.

How does UberSELECT work?
UberSELECT works like the other Uber car services — via the Uber App. Your credit card is charged at the end of your ride, and the entire transaction is done on an entirely cashless basis.
When you ‘hail’ a car through the Uber App, you will be matched with a nearby driver who is using their own privately-owned vehicle as a rideshare driver.
How much does UberSELECT cost?
Base Fare.
A fee is charged at the beginning of all Uber SELECT rides. While this varies between cities, the base fare for Uber SELECT is between $3 and $5 (compared to approximately $8 for an Uber BLACK car).
Cost Per Minute.
Per-Minute costs also vary between cities, but the average Cost Per Minute for Uber SELECT is between $0.40 and $0.50,
Cost Per Mile
Per-Minute costs differ in various cities, but the usual Cost Per Mile for UberSELECT is between $2.10 and $2.75.
Safe Ride Fee
Uber’s SafeRide fee usually adds a flat $1.00 to your ride.
Other Costs
UberSELECT rides have an across-the-board minimum fare of $10.35; a booking fee of $1.55, as well as a $5 cancellation fee, in case you decide to terminate your requested trip prior to pick-up.
Should you tip your UberSELECT driver?
Like all of Uber’s services, UberSELECT is entirely cashless.
Fare payments are completed through a rider’s registered credit or debit-card information (uploaded via the Uber App, installed on a rider’s phone).
Tips are technically not allowed or encouraged on any of the company’s related services (including Uber SELECT, UberX, XL, or Uber BLACK), but are sometimes given by riders as a voluntary gesture. Your Uber driver certainly will appreciate a tip.
If you decide to tip, the only way to do it is with cash (i.e., it’s not possible to tip via the Mobile App).
Why should I use UberSELECT?
Uber SELECT occupies an interesting part of the rideshare market — it’s advertised as an ‘affordable luxury’ option (‘luxury for less’), but is still priced well below UberBLACK and UberLUX.
And, while it may appear that UberSELECT is overlapping with some of Uber’s own pre-existing services, Uber claims it is not a redundant service. Instead, the sompany sees SELECT and BLACK/LUX catering to distinctly different markets.
UberSELECT, they suggest, is mostly for upscale social events, while Uber BLACK is aimed squarely at the business market.
Basically, if you want to ride in style, without spending a lot of money — which you certainly will with UberLUX and UberBLACK — then UberSELECT is probably for you.
Who drives for UberSELECT?
Like UberX, and UberXL, an Uber SELECT driver is an independent contractor.
SELECT Drivers must have an eligible 4-passenger luxury sedan, but do not need a commercial license (unlike UberBLACK or UberSUV, which both require a valid chauffeur’s license).
Uber SELECT drivers often earn much more than UberX drivers, taxi cab operators, or private chauffeurs. Hours are flexible, and depend entirely upon your work-schedule preference.
If you decide to become an Uber SELECT driver, you can expect to make anywhere between $17 and $37 an hour. Uber’s official per hour rate for UberX is $19.04 (according to their website and data tabulated via the Uber Driver App), so expect the average rate for an UberSELECT driver to be reasonably higher.
