Uber Honolulu: Uber offers five car services in Honolulu:

1. UberX (a low-cost option which seats up to four passengers)
2. UberXL (a low-cost ride which seats up to six passengers)
3. UberSELECT (similar to UberBLACK, but the car does not have to be black. More premium than UberX but cheaper than BLACK. Vehicles 6. seat up to four passengers).
4. UberASSIST (a wheelchair-capable option. Personnel are trained and provided via the Open Doors Organization.)
5. UberTAXI (a service which allows users to hail a regular taxi using Uber’s mobile smartphone app).

UberX Requirements

UberX Requirements:

  • Driver must be at least 21 years of age
  • Drivers must provide valid US driver’s license (all US States accepted).
  • Drivers must pass a full state & federal screening
  • Drivers must have an accepted vehicle (check below for additional info)
  • Honolulu Business License (check below for instructions on receiving your Honolulu Business License)
  • Hawaii Vehicle Registration Documents

UberX Vehicle Requirements:

As a company, Uber doesn’t own or operate any vehicles (all Uber Vehicles are driver-owned or leased). If you want to drive for Uber, you have to use your own private vehicle.

  • Your vehicle must have 4 doors (which open independently).
  • Your vehicle must be from the year 2004 or newer
  • You must have a clean title (no salvage vehicles are allowed).
  • Your vehicle must be In excellent condition (cosmetically & mechanically).
  • Your vehicle cannot be a former taxi vehicle, or large van.
  • All of the points listed above apply equally to XL.
  • All XL vehicles must seat the driver AND at least 6 additional passengers

Driver's License

Your driver’s license should clearly show these items:

  1. License Issue Date
  2. Your license number
  3. Your Date of Birth (DOB). You must be 21 Years of Age (or older) to be an Uber Driver
  4. License Expiry Date


Hawaii Vehicle Registration

Your registration must be current, not expired.


Drivers must have current Personal Automobile Insurance and it must meet the following requirements:

Insurance must be current & valid
Insurance must list driver as an insured driver on the vehicle
Driver’s name must be on the insurance card for the vehicle –
If driver’s name is NOT on the insurance card, driver MUST be listed as a driver on the insurance policy the vehicle is covered under
If your name is not on the insurance card but is on the policy, you MUST upload the entire policy to your Uber account.

Honolulu Business License

Honolulu Business License:

  • Honolulu rideshare drivers must register for a business license
  • After receiving your business license, you must register & pay a General Excise Tax.  You can get the full details on how to get a General Excise Tax license HERE.
  • If you need help attaining your business licenses in order to become an Uber driver in Honolulu, go to the Hawaii Business Express (HBE allows your to register your business and obtain licenses, as well as speak to representatives who will help you).

Honolulu Airport: Uber Airport Rules  for Pick-Ups and Drop-Offs :


UberX and XL drivers are NOT allowed to PICK UP passengers at Honolulu’s airports (Oahu Airports: Honolulu and Kalaeloa).

However, both UberX and UberSELECT drivers are permitted to drop passengers off at any of Maui’s airports.

Only UberSELECT drivers (with permits) are allowed to pick up passengers.  UberSELECT Partners with a PUC certificate or UberTAXI drivers can get  HNL airport stickers here.
