1. UberX (a low-cost service which seats up to four passengers)
2. UberXL (a low-cost service which seats up to six passengers)
3. UberBLACK (a high-end option, featuring black cars with black leather interiors, which seats up to four passengers)

UberX/XL requirements

  • Driver must be at least 21 years of age
  • Drivers aged 21 or 22 must have (at minimum) 3 years of valid licensing in the USA
  • Drivers aged 23 (and up) must have at least one year of valid licensing in the USA
  • Drivers must provide a valid Missouri Class A, B, C, or E Driver’s License or any class of Kansas Driver’s License.
  • Drivers must pass a screening process (details below)
  • Drivers must have an accepted vehicle (check below for additional info)
  • Drivers must register for a Small Business License (Obtain TNC Documents)

UberX/XL Vehicle Requirements

As a company, Uber doesn’t own or operate any vehicles (all Uber Vehicles are driver-owned or leased). If you want to drive for Uber, you have to use your own private vehicle.

  • Vehicle must have 4 doors that open independently.
  • Vehicle must be from the year 2005 or newer.
  • Vehicle must be a clean title (no salvage vehicles are allowed).
  • Vehicle must be in excellent condition (cosmetically & mechanically).
  • Vehicle cannot be a former taxi vehicle, or large van.

For UberXL

  • All of the points listed above apply equally to XL.
  • All XL vehicles must seat the driver AND at least 6 additional passengers
  • UberX/XL document requirements:
  • All Uber drivers must provide these documents for their Uber account to be officially activated:
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Vehicle Registration

Background Check/Screening Process

New drivers must undergo a screening process (by a company called Checkr), for a standard background-check. Once you submit your info, you may look into the status of your Checkr application here: applicant.checkr.com).

Driver's License

Your driver’s license should clearly show these items:

  1. License Issue Date
  2. Your license number
  3. Your Date of Birth (DOB). You must be 21 Years of Age (or older) to be an Uber Driver
  4. License Expiry Date

Uber Kansas City – Small Business License (TNC Step #1):

Prospective Uber & rideshare drivers MUST register for a small business license at Bizcare:

Fill out the application for a small business license (online, or Uber’s Greenlight office, or at BizCare itself). Submit the application along with a $12.50 application fee at Bizcare (1118 Oak St, Kansas City, MO).

On the form, partners only need to fill in the highlighted fields (see form online). When submitting to Bizcare, inform the receptionist that you are submitting a form for an Uber license.  You will receive your business license immediately after submitting the application and application fee. Once you receive your business license, upload a picture to your account at partners.uber.com or via the Uber Partner app.

Driver’s Certificate & Vehicle Permit (TNC Step #2):

The final step of the TNC ordinance is obtaining a Drivers Certificate and Vehicle Permit from Regulated Industries.  Uber KC is making these applications available for partners (download them by clicking the links above).  Fill out the forms and go to drop them off at Regulated Industries:

At Regulated Industries, pick up (and fill out) a Declaration of Medical Fitness (you can also access the form using this link). Remember that when you go to Regulated Industries to drop off your forms you MUST bring

Regulated Industries will call you, and eventually schedule a meeting.   You will have to bring with you to this meeting:

  • Your driver’s license
  • Your vehicle registration
  • Your ‘Small Business License’ (Bizcare steps outlined above)
  • Another form of identification including – Social Security Card without employment restriction; U.S. Passport or Passport Card; Permanent Resident Card; Green Card; Foreign Passport with I-551 stamp MRIV; Employment Authorization Card; Form DS-2019 accompanied by Form I-94 or Form I-94A; or Form I-94Form I-20 accompanied by Form I-94 or Form I-94A;  or Form I-94A Arrival/Departure Record.
  • Your smartphone, including installed Uber app

The appointment will be brief. Afterwards, you will be given your Drivers Certificate and Vehicle Permit.

When  you receive your Driver’s Certificate and Vehicle Permit, upload a picture to your Uber account at partners.uber.com.
